titleOfInvention Means and Method for separating blood in its components
abstract A device for separating whole blood into blood components has a collecting container (1) for collecting the whole blood, a primary container (2) and one or more satellite containers (3, 3 ') connected downstream of the primary container. The collecting container (1) is connected to the primary container via a line branch (9, 15) which contains a leukocyte filter (11). In addition, a by-pass line (18) is provided to create a fluid connection bypassing the filter (11) between the collecting container (1) and the primary container (2). The primary container (2) is also connected via an additive line to an additive container (4) which contains an additive for storing a blood component. To obtain leukocyte-free erythrocyte concentrate, the whole blood of the donor collected in the collecting container (1) is first transferred to the primary container via the by-pass line (18). The whole blood in the primary container is then separated by centrifugation into an erythrocyte layer and a mixed layer of butplasma and platelets. The mixed layer, including blood plasma and platelets, is now transferred from the primary container (1) to the first satellite container (3). The erythrocytes resuspended with the additive are then transferred from the primary container (2) via the line branch (9, 15) to the collecting container (1), which contains the leukocyte filter (11).
