abstract The present invention provides an alkalinenstorage battery which comprises a positive electrodenprepared by filling a nickel hydroxide in a porous plaquenas an active material, a negative electrode, a separatornand an alkaline electrolyte, said positive electrodencontaining the nickel hydroxide as a main component and ancomplex oxide of lithium and cobalt as a conductivenagent. The lithium-cobalt complex oxide as a conductivenagent is preferably represented by the formula Li x CoO 2 n(x is 0.2-0.9). A method for treating the surface of the positivenelectrode active material which comprises the step of forming ancoating layer of cobalt hydroxide on nickel hydroxide powdersnis also disclosed.
