The current SO x uptake rate is determined on the basis of a functional relationship and integrated in time. When a threshold value is exceeded, a desulfurization cycle is initiated, during which the nitrogen oxide trap is brought to a predetermined temperature for a predetermined time and the internal combustion engine is operated with a predetermined air / fuel ratio during this time. The temperature is changed by changing the ignition point in the "late" direction and by means of a variable exhaust system.
