abstract A high-quality optical compensator for use in liquidncrystal display elements can be prepared from a film comprisingnan end unit modified liquid crystalline polymer which has anmonofunctional structural unit and which exhibits an opticallynpositive uniaxiality, and, as needed, a liquid crystallinenpolymer which has a logarithmic viscosity at least 0.01 dl/gnhigher than that of the end unit modified liquid crystallinenpolymer and a glass transition point at least 5 °C higher thannthat of the end unit modified liquid crystalline polymer andnwhich exhibits an optically positive uniaxiality, wherein annematic hybrid orientation which is formed in the liquid crystalnstate is immobilized.
