abstract A process for preparing high-purity alkyl carboxylates efficiently by esterifying a carboxylic acid with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst, characterized in that a solid acid catalyst is used as the catalyst and that the esterification is completed by conducting dehydration in the course of the esterification to remove the formed water from the reaction system and thereafter resuming the esterification. The dialkyl esters of alkanedioic acids prepared by the process can suitably be used as intermediates for the preparation of drugs, agricultural chemicals, perfumes, dyes, liquid-crystal materials, polymers and so on.
