The invention relates to water-insoluble, bacteriophobic and optionally cell proliferation-inhibiting polymers, obtainable by free-radical polymerization of (a) at least one monomer of the general formula R- (A) a , in which R denotes an aliphatic unsaturated organic radical with the valence a ; A is a carboxyl group -COOH, sulfuric acid group -OSO 2 OH, sulfonic acid group -SO 3 H, phosphoric acid group -OPO (OH) 2 , phosphonic acid group -PO (OH) 2 , phosphoric acid group -0P (OH) 2 , phenolic hydroxyl group or a salt of one of the above Designated groups; and a represents 1, 2 or 3; with the proviso that if the monomer of the formula I has a carboxyl group -COOH or a carboxylate group, either this monomer contains at least one further radical A having another of the meanings mentioned for A or at least one further monomer of the formula I in which A is a other has the meanings given for A, is also used; and (b) at least one other aliphatic unsaturated monomer. The invention also relates to the use of the polymers for the production of bacteriophobic and optionally cell proliferation-inhibiting products, the products as such and the polymers, insofar as they are new, and their production.
