abstract | An adhesive composition (I) with a low volatile organic compound (VOC) content is based on a polyvinyl alcohol stabilised aqueous vinylester-ethylene-copolymer with a solids content of 30-65 wt.% with (A) 100 pts. wt. polyvinyl ester (B) 10-100 pts. wt vinylester-ethylene copolymer (C) 1-10 pt. wt. of a partially or fully saponified polyvinyl alcohol (viscosity 40-120 mPa.s, 4% aqueous solution, DIN 53015) and a degree of hydrolysis of 85-100 mol.%. A process for the preparation of (I) is also claimed by radical, aqueous emulsion polymerisation in the presence of dispersants and radical initiators. 10-100 pts. wt. of a vinyl ester of a 1-18C carboxylic acid and 0-20 pts. wt. of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer are mixed in the presence of ethylene at 20-80 bar to at least 90 mol. % conversion followed by the polymerisation of 100 pts. wt. of a vinyl ester of a 1-18C carboxylic acid and 0-50 pts. wt. of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer. 1-10 pts. wt. of (C) is added during or after polymerisation. |
