abstract A novel cathode of low hydrogen overvoltage is providednwhich is useful for electrolysis of water and electrolysisnof an aqueous alkali metal chloride such as sodium chloride.nA process for producing the cathode is also provided. Thenlow hydrogen overvoltage cathode comprises annelectroconductive base material; and a coating layerncontaining at least one organic compound selected from thengroup consisting of amino acids, monocarboxylic acids,ndicarboxylic acids, monoamines, diamines, triamines, andntetramines, and derivatives thereof at a content of fromn0.5% to 18% by weight in terms of carbon, and a metalncomponent selected from the group consisting of nickel,nnickel-iron, nickel-cobalt, and nickel-indium at an indiumncontent ranging from 1% to 90% by weight. The process fornproducing the low hydrogen overvoltage cathode comprisesnconducting electrodeposition to form a coating layer on ansurface of an electroconductive base material in a platingnbath containing at least nickel ions, nickel and iron ions,nnickel and cobalt ions, or nickel and indium ions, andncontaining additionally at least one organic compoundnselected from the group consisting of amino acids,nmonocarboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acids, monoamines,ndiamines, triamines, and tetramines, and derivativesnthereof.
