abstract | The present invention disclosesnintercalates formed by contacting a layerednmaterial, e.g., a phyllosilicate, with annintercalant monomer surface modifier including annalkyl radical having at least 6 carbon atoms and anpolymerizable monomer, oligomer or polymer. Thenintercalant monomer surface modifier converts theninterlayer region of the layered materials fromnhydrophilic to hydrophobic, therefore, polymerizablenmonomers, oligomers or polymers can be easilynintercalated into the interlayer spacing. The co-presencenof the intercalant monomer surface modifiernand polymerizable monomer, oligomer or polymernprovide an environment for more polymerizablenmonomers, oligomers or polymers to be intercalatedninto the interlayer spacing and the intercalates arenreadily exfoliated into polymer matrices to formnnanocomposites. The nanocomposites (e.g., epoxy-clay)nprepared from the intercalates demonstratednenhanced mechanical, thermal and chemical resistancencompared with pristine polymer matrices. |
