abstract The present invention describes an apparatus fornrecording a gradient image on transparent media comprising:nat least one solid phase change ink; a solid null imagenelement; a heating system capable of melting the solid phasenchange ink to form a molten phase change ink and capable ofnmelting the solid null image element to form a molten nullnimage element; a printing head (2) capable of receiving thenmolten phase change ink and the molten null image element andndepositing them in an imagewise pattern onto a transfernsurface (4); a transfer surface capable of receiving thenimagewise pattern; a cooling mechanism for cooling the moltennphase change ink and the molten null image element in thenimagewise pattern to form a malleable phase change ink (3) and anmalleable null image element (19) in the imagewise pattern on thentransfer surface; a media (6); a transfer mechanism capable ofntransferring said malleable phase change ink and saidnmalleable null image element in said imagewise pattern onnsaid transfer surface to said media.
