abstract The invention provides a method for preparing a modifiednoptically isotropic pitch wherein a synthetic pitch is obtained bynreacting a conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbon containing an alkylngroup having 1 to 10 carbons or a material containing such ansubstituted hydrocarbon using hydrofluoric acid/boron trifluoride asnthe catalyst and said synthetic pitch is then treated by forcing annoxidizing gas through it at elevated temperatures. n The modified optically isotropic pitch may be used to producenactivated carbon fibre or used in the anodes of secondary batteries.nProcess for preparing the pitch for such uses are disclosed.
