abstract Small particle identification is disclosed. A highnintensity light source provides light at a sensing region forncontact with small particles at the sensing region to causenresulting light that includes scattered light and emitted lightndue to heating of optically absorbing particles to incandescencenwith the resulting light terminating if vaporization of thenoptically absorbing particles occurs. A laser, having a laserncavity with the sensing region within the laser cavity,npreferably provides high intensity laser light in the laserncavity for contact with the small particles at the sensingnregion. Utilizing optical detection, predetermined particlencharacteristic determination is enabled, including particle sizenand composition of optically absorbing particles.
