abstract An aminodiol having primary and secondary hydroxyl groups isnselectively N-aceplated in high yield through a simple procedure. Innparticular, a primary amide derivative represented by formula (3) :n nwherein R 1 represents a saturated linear hydrocarbon group having 11nto 19 carbon atoms, and R 2 represents a saturated or unsaturated linearnhydrocarbon group having 9 to 19 carbon atoms which may or maynnot have a hydroxyl group in the 1-position ; is prepared by reactingnan aminodiol represented by formula (1) :n nwherein R 1 is the same as R 1 in the formula (3), with a fatty acid alkylnester represented by formula (2):n R 2 -COO-R 3 nwherein R 2 is the same as R 2 in the formula (3) and R 3 represents anlower alkyl group, in a reaction system comprising an alcohol-basednsolvent and a basic catalyst. By-products consisting of lower alcoholsnare removed during the reaction from the reaction system.
