abstract A process for producing N-methyl-2-(3,4 dimethoxyphenyl) ethylamine in which 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl-methyl nitrile is hydrated with a methyl amine of the general formula (I) in which R<1> is hydrogen, benzyl or tert. butyl and hydrogen in the presence of a carrier catalyst containing 0.05 to 50 % wt. copper chromite, copper, silver, gold, iron, cobalt, nickel, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, platinum or their mixtures, possibly in the presence of water at temperatures from 20 to 200 DEG C and pressures of 1 to 300 bar.
