titleOfInvention | Air bag inflator |
abstract | An apparatus (10) for inflating an air bag includes ancontainer (12) having a chamber (16) for holding an inert gasnand an oxidizer gas under pressure. A body (20) of ancombustible material is disposed in the container (12). Thenbody (20) of combustible material comprises a non-metallicnnitrogen containing compound, a thermoplastic polymer, and annoxidizer material. The oxidizer material is selected from thengroup consisting of an alkali metal nitrate, alkali-earthnmetal nitrate, ammonium perchlorate, alkali metal perchlorate,nalkali-earth metal perchlorate, organo-ammonium nitrate, ornammonium dinitramide. An igniter (32) ignites the body (20)nof combustible material to generate combustion products thatnmix with, and heat, the inert gas and the oxidizer gas. Thenbody (20) of combustible material undergoes further combustionnupon exposure to the oxidizer gas to yield an inflation fluidncomprising the combustion products, the inert gas, and anynunreacted oxidizer gas. A conduit directs the inflation fluidnflow from the container (12) into an air bag. The apparatusnproduces unexpectedly low levels of CO, NO, NO 2 , HCN and HCOHnin the inflation fluid. |
