Containing compositions for dyeing keratin fibers, in particular human hair a) an aldehyde of the formula I. in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 independently of one another for hydrogen atoms, halogen atoms, C 1 -C 4 -alkyl-, C 2 -C 4 -hydroxyalkyl-, amino-C 1 -C 4 -alkyl-, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, nitro, carboxy, C 1 -C 4 acylamino, sulfo, hydroxy or amino groups which are substituted by C 1 -C 4 alkyl or C 2 -C 4 hydroxyalkyl groups can be, stand, and n stands for 0 or 1, and b) an oxidation dye precursor which is a primary or secondary aromatic amine; a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound; an aromatic hydroxy compound; is an amino acid, an oligopeptide composed of 2 to 9 amino acids, or a mixture of the above, with the proviso that if n is 0, the oxidation dye precursor is selected from the group 2-aminomethyl-4-aminophenol, 1,8-bis (2,5-diaminophenoxy) -3,6-dioxaoctane, 2,4 , 5,6-tetraaminopyrimidine, 2-methylamino-3-amino-6-methoxypyridine, 2,6-dimethoxy-3,5-diaminopyridine, 2- (2,5-diaminophenyl) ethanol and 1,3-bis- ( 2,4-diaminophenoxy) propane, amino acids, oligopeptides composed of 2 to 9 amino acids, or mixtures of the above.
