abstract A method wherein a layer (16) of a material (17) is applied to the surface of a glass object (10) with a view to etching the glass object (10), and a laser beam (18) is caused to interfere with said material. The material (17) making up said layer (16) is selected for its ability to react with the glass and, e.g. be diffused therein. The method is particularly suitable for marking moulds for ophthalmic lenses.
