A high cis-1,4-polybutadiene is produced, with anreduced gel formation, by preparing a catalyst from (A) ancobalt compound, (B) a trialkyl (C 1-10 ) aluminum compound,n(C) a halide compound selected from those of thenformulae (1) and (2): AlR 2 m X 3-m (1), R 3 -X(2), whereinnR 2 = C 1-10 hydrocarbon, X = halogen, m = 0 to 2, R 3 = C 1-40 nhydrocarbon, and (D) water in an amount of 0.77 ton1.45 moles per mole of total Al in the component (B) andn(C); and polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in the presence ofnthe resultant catalyst in a polymerization mediumnincluding an alkane, cycloalkane and/or olefinnhydrocarbon. |
