abstract The present invention provides an industriallynadvantageous process for the preparation of an opticallynactive 2-halo-1-(substituted phenyl)ethanol useful asnmedicines, agricultural chemicals or as intermediatesnthereof; and a simple process for the preparation of annoptically active substituted styrene oxide or 2-amino-1-(substitutednphenyl)ethanol useful as medicines, agriculturalnchemicals or intermediates thereof. A 2-halo-1-(substitutednphenyl)ethanol represented by the following general formulan(I) is allowed to contact, in the presence of a carboxylicnanhydride, with an enzyme stereoselectively catalyzing esterninterchange to produce an optically active 2-halo-1-(substitutednphenyl)ethanol:n n(wherein X represents a chlorine atom or a bromine atom, andnR 1 , R 2 and R 3 may be the same or different and each representna hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a C 1-5 alkyl group, a C 1-5 nhaloalkyl group, a C 1-5 alkoxy group, a cyano group or a nitrongroup, with the proviso that when two of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 arenalkyl groups or alkoxy groups, they may be combined together nto form a ring and that all of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are not hydrogennatoms at the same time).
