titleOfInvention Hydroxymethylation of Tocopherols
abstract In a process for converting non-α-tocopherols into α-tocopherol by reacting at least one non-α-tocopherol with formaldehyde or a derivative thereof in the presence of boric acid or a derivative thereof under catalytically reducing conditions, solvents are used with the additional function of Catalyst an azeotropic mixture of trimethyl borate and methanol and a non-polar organic solvent used as another solvent. The working up of this process is a further subject of the invention and consists in treating the mixture remaining after the reaction with methanol, whereby the boric acid dissolves in the methanol, the resulting solution, if necessary supplemented by rinsing of the non-polar organic solvent, with the solid solution The catalyst is filtered off, the (entire) filtrate is treated with water, after phase separation the non-polar organic solvent is removed from the organic phase by distillation to release the reaction product α-tocopherol, and the aqueous phase, which consists mainly of methanol, water and boric acid, is known as a reactive distillation subjects to separate the trimethyl borate produced in the distillation as a result of the esterification of boric acid with methanol as an "azeotropic" mixture of trimethyl borate and methanol. Using this work-up, the reaction product consisting mainly of α-tocopherol can be isolated and the methanol, the water, the non-polar organic solvent, the hydrogenation catalyst and the boric acid can be isolated and reused as an "azeotropic" mixture of trimethyl borate and methanol.
