abstract A method for separating water from crude oil uses as petroleum emulsion cracking agent a mixture of A) active cracking compounds of the structural type (a) polyethyleneamine alkoxylates, (b) mono- or oligoamine alkoxylates, (c) alkoxylated alkyl phenol formaldehyde resins, (d) alkoxylated amine-modified alkyl phenol formaldehyde resins, (e) co- or terpolymers of alkoxylated acrylic or methacrylic acid esters with vinyl compounds, (f) condensation products from mono- or oligoamine alkoxylates, dicarboxylic acids and alkylene oxide block copolymers, where these condensation products may be fully or partially quaternized at the nitrogen atoms or (g) compounds (a) - (f) reacted with cross-linking agents, and B), as demulsifying agents, non-cracking polyalkyleneglycol ethers of general formulae (I): R<1>[(OA<1>)a—OH]n or (II): H—(OA<1>)b—(OA<2>)c—(OA<3>)d—OH wherein R<1> is a one-to-ten bond radical of a C1-C20 alkyl group, a phenyl group or an alkyl phenyl group with 1 to 20 C atoms, A<1> to A<3> are in each case a 1,2-alkylene group with 2 to 4 C atoms or a styrene group, n is a number from 1 to 10, a is a number from 1 to 50 and b, c and d are in each case a number from 0 to 50, the sum of b + c + d being greater than 3.
