titleOfInvention Method of producing secondary metabolites
abstract A method of producing secondary metabolites, innparticular for the bioremediation of waste waterncontaining certain pollutants, comprises providing anporous substratum which has a biofilm of micro-organismnattached thereto, and causing a nutrient solution tonflow through the substratum, at a rate which isnsufficiently low for a nutrient gradient to benestablished across the biofilm, such that the nutrientnconcentration at a high level along the gradient isnsufficiently high to support primary growth of thenmicro-organism, and the nutrient concentration at lownlevel along the gradient being sufficiently low toninduce secondary growth of the micro-organism, therebynto produce secondary metabolite. The substrate is innthe form of a hollow fibre membrane having a relativelynthin, porous skin on the inside, and a relativelynthick, finger-like, externally unskinned void structurenradiating outwardly from the skin.
