abstract | A process for producing readily in a high yield a substituted 1,3,5-triazine derivative wherein at least one ring carbon atom is substituted by a secondary amino group having at least one alkyl group. The process comprises reacting a 1,3,5-triazine derivative having at least one (monosubstituted) amino group on the ring carbon atom, such as melamine, its derivative or guanamine derivative, with an aldehyde or ketone in the presence of a hydrogen-containing gas and a group VII and/or group VIII catalyst, such as a rhodium complex catalyst, thereby alkylating the at least one (monosubstituted) amino group. This derivative is useful as an intermediate for producing various fine chemicals such as pesticides, medicines, dyes and coating materials and is also widely usable as resinous and flame-retardant materials. |
