titleOfInvention | Catalyst system for the synthesis of rubbery polymers |
abstract | The subject invention relates to an anionicnpolymerization technique for synthesizing rubberynpolymers of conjugated diolefin monomers, such as annrubbery copolymer of α-methylstyrene and 1,3-butadiene.nThese rubbery copolymers exhibit annexcellent combination of properties for utilization inntire tread rubber compounds. They have high transisomerncontents which leads to good treadwearncharacteristics and a broad molecular weightndistribution which enhances processability. Thisninvention more specifically discloses a process fornthe synthesis of rubbery polymers which have a broadnmolecular weight distribution and which arenparticularly useful in tire tread rubber compounds, nsaid process comprising the polymerization of at leastnone conjugated diolefin monomer in an organic solventnin the presence of a catalyst system which isncomprised of (a) a dialkyl magnesium compound and (b)nan alkali metal containing compound selected from thengroup consisting of alkali metal alkoxides, alkalinmetal phenoxides, alkali metal sulfoxides, alkalinmetal sulfonates, alkali metal carboxylates, alkylnsubstituted alkali metal phenoxides, alkali metalnalkylamines, and alkali metal dialkylamines; whereinnthe molar ratio of the alkali metal containingncompound to the dialkyl magnesium compound is withinnthe range of about 6:1 to about 1:5. In cases wherenrubbery copolymers containing α-methylstyrene arenbeing synthesized the alkali metal in the alkali metalncontaining compound will normally be potassium, nrubidium, or cesium with cesium being most preferred. |
