abstract Prodn. of Mannich reagents comprises (A) reacting formaldehyde with a sec. amine in the absence of a solvent or (B) reacting "a diaminomethane prepd. from a secondary amine", formaldehyde and water together in equimolar amts.. Also claimed is a process for aminomethylating delta -tocopherol, or a tocopherol mixt. contg. it, using a Mannich reagent prepd. as above. Also claimed is a process for regenerating excess Mannich reagent used in a process as above, comprising distilling off the excess, adding water to the distillate while stirring at room temp., heating the mixt. to 80 degrees C. and adding formaldehyde while stirring.
