Phenolic resin-modified natural resin-montan resin copolymers that consist essentially of a) 10 to 90% by weight of natural resin or natural resin acids, b) 1 to 90% by weight of montan resin (fossil terpene resin), c) 0 to 25% by weight of fatty acids or fatty acid compounds, d) 5 to 50% by weight of mononuclear or multinuclear phenols, e) 1 to 20% by weight of aldehydes or aldehyde acetals, f) 0.01 to 2 wt .-% metal compounds from group IIa of the periodic table and g) 1 to 20 wt .-% polyfunctional alcohols exist, are suitable as binder resins in coatings and printing inks.
