titleOfInvention | FIXING ORTHOPEDIC DEVICES |
abstract | The invention discloses a system for use of an intramedullary device (13) for repair of a fracture (11) in a bone such as a femur (10) where an intramedullary device (13) has a bore (14) from its proximal end (15) to its distal end (16) and is inserted into the cancellous tissue (12) of the intramedullary channel toward the distal channel section of the femur (17) through a hole that is reamed or drilled in the cortical layer of the bone; the system secures the device at its distal end (16) by an effective amount of resorbable cement (23) that is injected by use of a syringe (24) (or other suitable device) through the bore (14) so that the cement (23) is communicated to the distal end (16) of the intramedullary device (13) into the distal channel section of the femur (17) where the cement (23) cures and bonds the rod to the bone; the device may be secured at its proximal end (15) by insertion of an interlocking nail or screw (18) which extends through a hole from a position on the greater trochanter (19) to a position near the lesser trochanter (20) of the femur (10); the use of resorbable cement (23) for securing the intramedullary device temporarily until the cement (23) is resorbed and replaced by bone has wide applicability for repair of bones, augmentation of osteopenic skeleton and attachment of prostheses because the intramedullary device is easily removed after healing thus returning the physiological load to the bone. |
