abstract The selective methylation of toluene to produce para-xylene is effected by reacting toluene with a methyl halide at a temperature ranging from about 100 to about 500 DEG C and a pressure ranging from about 1 to about 10 atmospheres, in the presence of a shape-selective zeolite catalyst in protonated form having a Si/Al ratio of at least about 25.
