titleOfInvention | Iontophoretic drug delivery system and method |
abstract | An iontophoretic drug delivery device (20) includes a power source (23) and an electrode assembly (24) containing at least two electrodes (32, 42) in electrical contact with a first reservoir (34) and a second reservoir (44) or at least three electrodes in a three electrode embodiment, with the third electrode (52) in electrical contact with a third reservoir (54). The present invention includes in its two electrode embodiment a switch (56) for reversing the flow of current or in its three electrode embodiment a switch (66) for switching the flow of current, so as to reduce sensation. The devices also include a timer (58) for controlling the amount of time the electrical current flows in each direction. The devices are timed to deliver an active agent to the area approximate the second reservoir (44) when the electrical current flows in the other direction. |
