abstract An apparatus and method for dispensing a predetermined volume of liquid from a closed, liquid-containing blood collection tube (4) is described. The apparatus includes a dual conduit (24) providing a passageway (30) for liquid to be dispensed from a closed blood collection tube (4) and a gas conduit (32, 34) providing a passage way for gas to be introduced into the blood collection tube (4). Included in the apparatus is a means (26) of inserting the dual conduit (24) into the blood collection tube (4), a means (56) of turning the tube away from a vertical, upright orientation, a means of connecting and disconnecting the gas passageway from a gas supply (52), a means (68) for displacing a volume of gas through the gas passageway (32, 34), and a means of controlling the operation of the apparatus. A method is also disclosed involving insertion of a dual conduit (24) into the closed blood collection tube (4), connecting a gas supply (52) to a gas conduit (32, 34) of the dual conduit (24), rotating the tube away from a vertical, upright orientation, introducing a volume of gas corresponding to a signal into the blood collection tube (4), receiving a predetermined volume of liquid from the blood collection tube (4), and physically disconnecting the gas supply from the gas passageway.
