abstract A magnetic recording medium comprising a magnetic layer provided on one side of a base film made from an aromatic polyamide or polyimide, wherein the number (H2) of coarse surface protrusions on the magnetic layer side and the number (H3) of coarse surface protrusions on the nonmagnetic layer side satisfy the following conditions: H2 ≦ 50, 2 ≦ H3 ≦ 100 and the Young's modulus (E20) of extension in at least one direction of the base film at 20 °C and the Young's modulus (E100) of extension in the same direction of the base film at 100 °C satisfy the following conditions: E20 ≧ 800 kg/mm², 0.5 ≦ E100/E20. This medium is excellent in durability, traveling behavior and output characteristics under severe environmental conditions, particularly at high temperatures.
