The smoking article 1 comprisesna heating unit 2, a catalytic unit 3 in gas flow communicationnwith the heating unit 2, an alkali source means 4, in the formnof a cylindrical body of paper loaded with ammomium carbonate,nan aerosol generation means in the form of an aerosol elementn5, comprising a cylindrical body 12 of cut tobacco as annicotine source means wrapped in an impervious wrapper 13 andnan annular layer 14 of particulate substrate material loadednwith propylene glycol and glycerol, a mixing space 17 at thenrearward end of the aerosol element 5 and a velocitynaccelerating orifice 20 located intermediate the mixing spacen17 and a distribution space 18. A mouthpiece element 6 ofnporous cellulose acetate is provided at the mouth end of thensmoking article 1 adjacent the distribution space 18. Such annarrangement provides an enhanced release of nicotine andnpropylene glycol/glycerol from their respective sources.
