titleOfInvention | Vulcanizable rubber composition and tire prepared therefrom |
abstract | A sulphur-vulcanisable rubber mixt. (RM) contg. no aromatic process oil comprises: (a) elastomeric copolymer(s) of conjugated diene and aromatic vinyl cpd.; (b) a filler contg. finely divided pptd. silica (SIL) and carbon black (CB) in a vol. ratio of (1:1)-(20:1); (c) plasticiser(s); (d) liq. polymers and/or asphaltenes; (e) opt. diene elastomer(s) and (f) opt. conventional additives. Also claimed is (i) a process for the prodn. of the RM by (a) mixing all the components except for the vulcanisation system (VS), at up to 180 degrees C, and (b) adding the VS at below the vulcanisation temp.; (ii) moulded prods. contg. sulphur-vulcanised RM, esp. tyre treads or conveyor belts; (iii) tyres with treads as in (ii) above. Pref. the SIL has a BET surface of 40-350 m<2>/g, a CTAB surface of 50-350 m<2>/g, a mean particle dia. of 10-150 mu m and a DBP no. of 50-350 ml/100 g. Pref. SIL is a special silica with a N2 surface of 35-350 m<2>/g and a BET/CTAB ratio of 0.8-1.2. Within this range, silica with a N2 surface (NS) of less than 100 m<2>/g has a pore vol. (by Hg. porosimetry) of 2.5-3.4 ml/g, a Sears no. of 6-12 ml and a mean aggregate size of 900-1500 nm; corresp. values for other NS values are 2.4-3.2 ml/g, 8-15 ml and 400-850 nm for NS = 100-150 m<2>/g, 1.8-2.6 ml/g, 10-16 ml and 300-550 nm for NS = 150-200 m<2>/g and 1.6-2.3 ml/g, 12-20 ml and 250-520 nm for NS = more than 200 m<2>/g. Pref. SIL has good grindability, as shown by a mean particle size (by Malvern laser diffraction) of not more than 11 (pref. not more than 10) microns after grinding on an 'Alpine Kolloplex Z 160' impact pin mill (RTM) with a throughput of 6 kg/hr. |
