abstract A soil ameliorant comprising a flue gas desulfurization by-product comprising substantially 50 to 99 percent by weight gypsum and 1 to 20 percent by weight magnesium hydroxide. There is also disclosed a method for ameliorating acid soil to enhance plant growth therein comprising adding an amount of between 0.05 and 20 percent by weight of such a soil ameliorant to acid soil.
