titleOfInvention | Display device |
abstract | A display device employing electro-optical fluids which contain dielectric particles having an electro-rheological effect in an electrically insulating medium is proposed. The display device includes a hollow housing body, two opposing faces of which have respectively at least transparent opposing part and in which the electro-optical fluids are contained. Transparent conductive layers are formed on at least part of respective faces of the two opposing faces of the housing body. Optical shutters are formed in the housing body by chain-like structures of the dielectric particles which, by applying voltage to the transparent conductive layers, are arranged to be connected to each other in the direction along an applied electric field. Desired characters, numerals, figures and the like can be displayed by operating the optical shutters. The transparent conductive layers can be formed on an entire surface or formed as line conductor. Otherwise, the transparent conductive layers can be stacked to form a multilayered structure, thus enabling the display device to switch selectively displayed shapes. |
