abstract | A copolymer having a polyacrylate skeleton as the main chain and a liquid crystal group in the side chain, which copolymer has a number-average molecular weight of 1,000 or above and is composed of repeating acrylate units (I) each having a liquid crystal group bonded thereto by means of an ester linkage via an alkylene chain and repeating acrylate units (II) each having a liquid crystal group bonded thereto by means of an ester linkage via an alkylene chain having a siloxane linkage in a molar ratio of the units (I) to the units (II) of 95/5 to 20/80. This copolymer is a side-chain type of polymer liquid crystal which exhibits liquid crystallinity at a comparatively low temperature, i.e., around room temperature, and is useful as the material of large-area display elements that are driven at low temperature, optical shutters, light-modulating glass, and so forth. |
