abstract | Cpds. (I) contg. activated ethylenically unsatd. gps. are selectively hydrogenated by redn. in the presence of an organic acid and a catalytic amt. of I2 or HI under addn. of ≥ 40% soln. of hypophosphoric acd in a manner such that the temp. of the refluxing reaction mixt. is above 113 degrees C. MORE SPECIFICALLY - (I) are cpds. contg. an electronegative gp., e.g. halo, CO, COOH, OH, NH2, NO2, SO2 or CN, in the immediate vicinity of an ethylenic bond and are esp. heterocyclic cpds. contg. exocyclic ethylenic bonds, e.g. a 5-R-2,4-imidazolidinedione where R = thienylmethylidene, p-chlorophenyl methylidene, naphthyl methylidene, pyridyl methylidene, furyl methylidene, pyrrolyl methylidene, anthranyl methylidene or p-cyanophenyl methylidene. Fumaric acid, acrylonitrile, 1-cyclohexeneamine and cinnamic acid are other examples of cpds. (I). |
