abstract The procedure for monitoring the efficiency of a liquid filter (21) having two chambers (22, 23) separated by a filtering membrane (24) linked to a source (10) of a liquid (e.g. blood) to be treated and an outlet for the filtered liquid consists of measuring and recording a reference trans-membrane pressure in the new filter for a given amount of filtered liquid, measuring the trans-membrane pressure after each use of the filter or at regular intervals, and comparing the results with the reference pressure reading. The reference pressure is used to calculate a pressure for the limit of the filter's use, and the filter system is arranged to set off an alarm once the limit pressure is reached.
