abstract | A chemical reaction involving a catalyst or enzyme is performed in a screw extruder comprising a barrel 1A containing co-rotating screws 2, 3. The catalyst or enzyme is coated on to a surface of the screws and/or barrel wall. The screws intermesh and closely wipe over each other and the barrel wall so that a thin film of reactants is mixed continuously. Reactants are introduced through inlet 8 and discharged through outlet 9 against spring-loaded ball seal 10. The catalyst may be cast on a magnetic support and held magnetically in the extruder, the catalyst emerging with the catalysed mix from which the catalyst is then separated. The reactor cap be used for polymerisation, hydrogenation of fatty nitriles or edible vegetable oils, platinum metal hydrogenation and hydroformylation reactions, fat hardening, dimerisation of oleic acid, transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate, hydrogenation of molasses, conversion of waste lignin and carbohydrates, and the recovery of glucose from dustbin waste. <IMAGE> |
