abstract | A novel method for preparing slightly coloured alkylpolysaccharides having a low acid breakdown product content by a reaction between a saccharide and an excess amount of a fatty alcohol, followed by neutralisation with a base. Said base is a tertiary amine of formulae (IA) or (IB), wherein m is an integer from 0 to 5; each of R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 which are the same or different, is a C1-6 alkyl radical; a C2-4 hydroxyalkyl or dihydroxyalkyl radical; a phenyl radical; or a radical of formula (CnH2n-O)xH, wherein n is an integer from 2 to 4 and x is an integer from 2 to 5; or R1 and R2, taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, may be a 5- to 7-membered optionally substituted, saturated or unsaturated heterocyclic ring comprising 1-3 heteroatoms selected from oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur. |
