titleOfInvention | Die insert for the extrusion of a gas generant grain |
abstract | Void-free gas generant grains comprising an oxidizer and a thermosettable resin are formed in a die assembly attached to an extruder at less than 93°C, said assembly comprising a coupler (10), a first generally toroidal die body (11) having a receiving chamber (14, 16) in communication with said coupler, part (14) of the receiving chamber (14, 16) has the shape of a truncated cone having an apex subtending an angle of from 20° to 90°; a second generally toroidal die body (32) has a lobate forming chamber (19) in communication with the receiving chamber (14, 16); and a die insert (21) comprising a conical leadin section (24) whose apex projects into the coupler (10) and subtends an angle of from 20° to 90°, a generally cylindrical middle section (28) disposed within the receiving chamber (14, 16), a conical distal section (30) disposed within the forming chamber (19), and at least one elongate hole-forming pin (31) projecting downstream from said distal section (30), said leadin section (24), middle section (28), and distal section (30) having a plurality of longitudinal flutes (27) arrayed around their periphery and extending from the leadin section (24) to the distal section (30). |
