Collagen-based implants, e.g. cartilage implants, having improved tensile strength, elongation and flexibility are disclosed. The implants are prepared by forming a mixture of an atelopeptide collagen fiber and a crosslinking agent, forming the mixture into a gelled shaped article, drying the gelled shaped article under controlled drying conditions to a moisture level of 30 to 40% by weight, and curing the dried article under controlled curing conditions to a moisture level of less than 30% by weight. The drying and curing conditions give rise to tightly crosslinked, rehydratable implants having an equilibrium hydration value of less than 350% by weight. |
