abstract |
The invention relates to the removal of small amounts of iron from a chromium-containing electrolyte which is to be electrochemically regenerated to chromium-sulfuric acid. In a side reaction, the trivalent chromium that is also present in the cathode compartment is reduced to divalent chromium and the trivalent iron to divalent iron. By selective oxidation of the catholyte, only the divalent chromium is oxidized to trivalent chromium. The trivalent chromium is then precipitated by adding an alkali hydroxide and the iron-containing solution obtained is separated off. The chromium III hydroxide is redissolved in the electrolyte. |
