abstract A process for the preparation of metal-free phthalocyanines which can carry up to 16 halogen atoms, cyano groups, carboxyl groups, sulfo groups, C₁-C₁₈ alkyl groups and / or aryl radicals as substituents, by reductive cyclization of ortho-phthalonitrile, substituted ortho-phthalonitriles or mixtures thereof, by the cyclization in C₂-C₄-alkylene mono-, -oligo-, -polyglycols, their mono-C₁-C₈-alkyl or -aryl ethers or their mixtures in the presence of an aromatic compound of general formula I. in which the substituents X can be the same or different and denote hydroxy, mercapto, amino or C₁-C₆-alkylamino, the substituents Y can also be the same or different and halogen, C₁-C₆-alkyl, C₁-C₆-alkoxy or C₁- C₆-Alkoxycarbonyl mean, m stands for 1 to 4 and n stands for 0 to 5, the sum m + n ≦ 6 and the benzene ring A can be fused to another benzene ring, and an inorganic base.
