2-Part aq. compsn. for colouring hair which forms a gel on mixing comprises (by wt.): (a) an aq. alkaline lotion (pH 7-11) contg. 0.005-5% of 1 or more prim. intermediates (1) and at least 1 coupler (II) for the formation of oxidn. dyes, 0.1-5% of a quat. NH4 cpd. of formula R1R2R3R4N+ X- (III), 0.5-15% of an amphoteric surfactant (IV), and at least 70% H2O; and (b) an aq. developer (pH 2-6) contg. 0.5-40% of a peroxide oxidiser (V), and 0.1-20% of an H2O-insol. anionic polymer (VI) which dissolves to afford a gel when mixed with lotion (a). In formula R1-R3 = 1-6C alkyl or PhCH2; R4 = 12-22C alkyl;and X = anion. Pref. lotion (a) has pH 7.5-9.5, and comprises 0.005-2.5% (I) and (II), 0.5-2% (III), 2-8% (IV), and at least 70% H2O. Pref. aq. developer (b) has pH 2.5-4.5, and comprises 0.5-30% (V) (esp. 0.5-12% H2O2) and 0.5-10% (VI). |
