abstract The subject of the invention is an electrochromic system comprising a transparent electrically conductive layer (2), a layer of a cathodic electrochromic material (3) capable of reversibly inserting M⁺ cations of the H⁺ or Li⁺ type, an electrolyte layer (5), a layer of a counter electrode made of an anodic electrochromic material (7) and a second electrically conductive layer (8), a barrier layer (6) being interposed between the electrolyte (5 ) and the counter-electrode (7), said barrier layer being open to the diffusion of M⁺ cations.
