Sulfonic acid stilbenes of formula (I), wherein B represents -CH = CH- (cis or trans), -CH2CH2- or a bond; X represents NH or oxygen; Y represents oxygen or sulfur; Z represents NH, CH2, oxygen or sulfur; R1 represents hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, -CH2-Ar, or -Ar (where Ar represents a phenyl or naphthyl group, the phenyl or naphthyl groups being optionally substituted by a C1-C4 alkyl or an SO3M3 group); and M1, M2 and M3 each independently represent hydrogen or a pharmacologically acceptable cation. These compounds block infection of cells with HSV, and CMV, and can be used to prevent viral infection. |
