titleOfInvention Nuclear fuel rod with failure alleviating means
abstract A nuclear fuel element for use in power-producing, water-cooled, nuclear reactors, comprising a circular metal cladding tube (1) made of a zirconium base alloy containing cylindrical fuel pellets (3) defining an energy-generating section of said element, and an inert filler gas, further comprising a thermal neutron-absorbing body (16) in a solid state positioned within said cladding tube (1) and outside of said element section but accessible to water entering the interior of said cladding tube (1) through a cladding defect and capable of dissolving, evaporizing, or disintegrating upon contact with said water, thereby migrating to other parts of the interior of the element; and n   power producing nuclear reactors containing such fuel elements.
