A fungal endopolygalacturonase inhibitor (PGIP) is subjected to cloning and sequencing from both complementary DNA and genomic libraries of Phaseolus vulgaris. The invention also relates to the amino acid sequence of PGIP, vectors comprising the PGIP gene or parts thereof, and cells transformed by said vectors. The isolated sequences are used to transform plants sensitive to the pathogenic activities of fungi or microorganisms, into plants producing the PGIP protein. |
