Composition of a substance containing an onium salt and method of forming images. The onium salt comprises a chromophore which absorbs ultraviolet rays, an S, Se, As, N or P atom devoid of substituents having a higher energy occupied molecular orbital than that of the chromophore; an insulating group which binds the chromophore to the S, Se, As, N or P atom of the salt, and which substantially prevents pi resonance from the chromophore through the S, Se, As, N or P atom; and an anion. Onium salt can form a Bronsted acid when exposed to ultraviolet rays in the presence of a proton source. According to the imaging process, the onium salt is exposed to ultraviolet rays in the presence of a proton source, in order to convert the salt into a Bronsted acid. |
